Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving To You and Your Pets

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, I thought it would be a great time to cover some tips for you and your pet on Turkey day. Thanksgiving is a great time for you and your family to enjoy. It is also a very busy and some times hectic day, so it is important to not forget about your 4 legged family members. Below you will find some tips on how to keep your pet healthy and happy on turkey day!

Weather:

Thanksgiving is a colder holiday, as pet owners, we need to take that into consideration for our furry friends.
  • Bring your cats indoors. With company over and the colder weather, cats will have lots of places to hide. They will get under cars and inside wheel wells to stay warm.
  • Keep blankets outside with your dog and make sure they have a dog house or a warm place to go.
  • If you have a heating unit, use that in the garage or dogs area if the weather is too extreme.
  • Be sure to have a litter box inside if your cat is normally an outdoor cat.
Foods:

We all know that Thanksgiving is the time to stuff ourselves with every type of food and treat we can. While packing on the holiday pounds is good for us, it is not good for your pets.
  • Keep your pets away from the table; they will smell that turkey and some may even go for it!
  • Make sure you tell your company/family not to feed your pets
  • Remember to throw out and properly dispose of bones, aluminum, food wraps, turkey strings or any other choking hazards.
  • Keep to your pet’s regular food schedule, and do not feed them human food.
General Tips:

  • With company/family over, it can be very stressful for your pet. Give your pets a break from the craziness by giving them a quiet place to relax. Set aside a room for them, put a do not open/disturb sign on the door so they are not bothered.
  • Make sure all your four legged babies have their collars on with thier name tags and contact info on them. With people coming in and out, it is easy for them to sneak out the front door.
  • Keep an eye on your candles, fire place, and any other decorations that your pets may knock over with their wagging tail.
Hope these tips are helpful to everyone! Have a great Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends, and of course your pets!!
